German Cartel Office Drops Google In-Car Services Case Following Remedies

Germany’s Federal Cartel Office (antitrust regulator) has closed its investigation into Google’s in-car services after the company agreed to remedies that address issues related to market competition.

The Federal Cartel Office had raised concerns about the bundling of Google’s in-car maps and infotainment services, which it believed could limit opportunities for competitors. In December 2023, Google responded by proposing measures to allow integration of third-party maps and apps on its platform. The regulator stated that the commitments could lead to structural changes in the sector. The case is part of broader efforts under Germany’s competition law targeting digital companies with significant market importance. Google’s commitments will now be monitored for compliance as part of the resolution process.
