U.S. and China Prepare for AI Safety Talks

The U.S. and China are reportedly preparing for bilateral talks on AI safety in mid-September, amid growing concerns over rapidly advancing frontier AI capabilities. The discussions, if held, would be the first official bilateral talks focused exclusively on AI since Donald Trump began his second term.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to lead the U.S. delegation, while China may be represented by Vice Premier He Lifeng or senior official Ding Xuexiang.

The proposed agenda includes cooperation on monitoring AI-driven cyberattacks, information sharing and AI safety incidents. Washington is also expected to raise concerns over alleged Chinese distillation of U.S. AI models.

Experts believe establishing a channel for sharing AI safety information could help both countries manage emerging risks and potential cross-border AI crises.
