EU Court Upholds 4.1 Billion Euro Antitrust Fine Against Google
Google has lost its appeal against a 4.1 billion euro antitrust fine imposed by the European Commission over practices related to its Android mobile operating system. The ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union confirms the penalty after the company’s final appeal was dismissed.
The European Commission originally imposed a 4.34 billion euro fine in 2018, alleging that Google required smartphone manufacturers to pre-install Google Search, Chrome, and the Google Play Store on Android devices while restricting the use of competing operating systems. In 2022, a lower court reduced the fine to 4.1 billion euro.
Google said it had already modified its agreements in 2018 to comply with the Commission’s decision and would continue to focus on Android development. The company has received nearly 11 billion euro in antitrust fines from the European Union over the past decade. It also continues to face investigations under the Digital Markets Act involving search and app store practices.
