The Finance & Revenue Secretary, Tuhin Kanta Pandey Named As SEBI’s New Chairperson For Three Years

The Finance and Revenue Secretary, Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been named as SEBI- the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s new Chairperson, for a term of three years. Pandey will take charge from Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure as SEBI chief concludes on February 28, 2025.

Tuhin Kanta Pandey is a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre. Earlier Pandey served as Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), and in January 2025 ahead of the Union Budget, he was appointed Revenue Secretary. He played a crucial role in finalising the long pending sale of Air India and overseeing the listing of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) at the time as DIPAM.

This appointment puts to rest speculation about Buch receiving an extension. Buch, who led India’s market regulator for three years, took charge on March 2, 2022, after serving as a Whole-Time Member of the regulator from April 2017 to March 2022. She was SEBI’s first female chairperson and the first appointee from the private sector to head the organisation.
