FSB Calls for Stronger Human Oversight of Agentic AI in Finance
The Financial Stability Board (FSB), a global body that monitors the financial system and develops regulatory recommendations, has called for stronger human oversight of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) in banks and other financial institutions. Its final guidance highlights the need for robust safeguards as financial firms explore AI systems capable of planning and executing tasks with limited human intervention.
The guidance comes amid growing regulatory concerns about AI-related risks, including cyberattacks and the potential for automated systems to bypass existing safeguards. The FSB has strengthened its recommendations following feedback on its draft guidance, published in June, as interest in adopting agentic AI continues to grow across the financial sector.
The FSB has called for stronger human oversight of agentic AI, particularly in higher-risk applications. Financial institutions should establish clear thresholds for when AI agents require human approval. The final guidance also drops the term “synthetic employees”, highlighting that AI agents may interpret predefined goals in unexpected ways.
