Elon Musk’s Grok Limits Image Editing To Paid Users After Deepfake Reports

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has limited its image editing feature to paid subscribers after reports it was used to generate sexualised images, including of children. The move comes as UK regulator Ofcom said it contacted X, Musk’s social media platform that hosts Grok, following concerns about illegal content.

The restriction requires users to have a registered account with payment information to access image editing. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said urgent action is needed and backed Ofcom in taking enforcement measures. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) criticised the step, stating it does not address the harm already caused and called for safer design of AI tools. Public figures, including presenter Maya Jama, have asked Grok not to modify their photos. Downing Street said all options, including a boycott of X, remain under consideration, while X stated it removes illegal content and works with authorities on enforcement.
