CCI Chair Ravneet Kaur Flags AI-Driven Market Concerns, Urges Inter-Regulatory Action

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping market structures in India, raising new competition concerns that regulators must address, Competition Commission of India (CCI) Chair Ravneet Kaur said on December 19, 2025.

Speaking at the “Workshop on Artificial Intelligence, Competition and Governance,” Kaur noted that AI-driven business models can influence markets through algorithm-led outcomes and personalised pricing, which may affect consumer treatment. She emphasised that these risks often overlap with data protection and other regulatory domains, citing CCI scrutiny of WhatsApp as an example. Kaur said inter-regulatory coordination will be critical and highlighted statutory provisions allowing CCI to collaborate with sectoral regulators. She noted the absence of India’s data protection board in current discussions and suggested including bodies like the Consumer Protection Authority. Kaur also raised accountability issues in AI-driven markets, calling for flexible enforcement and sustained coordination as AI adoption expands.
