Google Withdraws EU Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft Cloud

Alphabet’s Google announced on Friday that it is withdrawing its EU antitrust complaint against Microsoft regarding alleged anti-competitive practices in cloud computing.

The decision follows a European Commission investigation into whether Microsoft’s practices in the cloud sector, including Azure, reinforce its market power alongside Amazon Web Services. Google filed the complaint last year, claiming that Microsoft’s policies locked customers into its platform. Giorgia Abeltino, head of government affairs and public policy for Google Cloud Europe, said the withdrawal comes as the Commission will examine problematic practices under a separate process. Amazon leads the EU cloud market with a 30% share, Microsoft holds 20%, and Google has 13%. The EU probe could designate Microsoft and AWS as gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act, imposing rules to increase market openness and provide users with more options.
