Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra Appointed As 26th RBI Governor
The government has appointed senior bureaucrat Sanjay Malhotra to succeed Shaktikanta Das as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), effective December 11, 2024. He is currently serving as Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.
Sanjay Malhotra is a 1990-batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre with more than 33 years of experience. He was the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Financial Services before becoming the Revenue Secretary. He has also served as the Chairman and Managing Director (MD) of the state-run Rural Electrification Corporation Limited and the ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council. Malhotra is a graduate of IIT Kanpur and a Princeton University public policy master’s degree holder.
Shaktikanta Das served as the RBI Governor since 2018 and was granted an extension, thus completing two consecutive three-year terms. Das is among the longest-serving governors in the history of the RBI.
