OpenAI’s Altman and Anthropic’s Amodei Address UN Security Council on AI Safety
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday in separate briefings on artificial intelligence safety and governance.
Altman highlighted AI’s potential to drive creativity, productivity and discovery, while also warning about possible misuse. He called for governments to work together to ensure AI development is guided by democratic institutions and remains under human control.
Altman said AI should benefit people and empower individuals, while cautioning against both excessive optimism and what he described as “doomerism” around the technology’s risks.
Amodei, who joined the meeting through a video call, called for greater international cooperation and oversight. He proposed international agreements covering areas such as preventing the use of AI to develop biological weapons and establishing global standards for testing new AI models.
Amodei also warned that poorly managed AI could pose risks to humanity and highlighted Anthropic’s focus on AI safety.
The discussions come as governments and technology companies face growing pressure to develop common safety standards and regulatory frameworks for increasingly capable AI systems.
