Only 9 Women CEOs In India’s Top 500 Listed Companies, MCA Data Presented In Lok Sabha

India’s top 500 listed companies have only nine women Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and 25 women Managing Directors (MDs), according to data presented by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) in the Lok Sabha.

The data also showed 67 women Executive Directors and 22 women Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) among these companies. The ministry said no assessment has been conducted on the barriers affecting the progression of women Directors into senior leadership positions. Across active companies in India, 11.60 lakh women Directors are associated with a total of 39.99 lakh Directors. Under the Companies Act, listed companies and certain large unlisted public companies are required to have at least one woman Director on their Boards.

Between 2021-22 and 2025-26, Registrars of Companies passed 50 orders for non-compliance with the woman Director requirement, imposing penalties totalling Rs 71.01 lakh.
