Meathead Movers Faces Lawsuit Alleging Age Related Discrimination

The Biden administration’s watchdog for employment discrimination is taking legal action against a California-based moving company, Meathead Movers, accusing it of discriminatory hiring practices against older workers. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) initiated the lawsuit, alleging that Meathead Movers has systematically excluded applicants over the age of 40 from positions in moving, packing, and customer service since at least 2017. The EEOC claims that the company, known for its “student-athlete movers” slogan, has favoured recruiting young college students, intentionally sidelining older workers regardless of their capabilities.

Meathead Movers denies wrongdoing, emphasising they’re open to hiring anyone of any age if they can handle the physical demands. The EEOC initially sought $15 million in damages, later reducing it to $5 million, while Meathead offered $750,000 to settle.

This legal battle might lead to more cases against companies that seem to favour younger workers. It could also make some companies rethink their approach to avoid legal issues. Another moving company, College Hunks Hauling Junk, explained that their name “Hunks” has nothing to do with targeting college students.

EEOC Chair Charlotte Burrows, appointed by President Biden, pledged to address challenges faced by older Americans in the workforce. She highlighted that assuming older workers are less capable is against the law and evidence. The EEOC aims to fight age discrimination and ensure all workers have equal opportunities.
