Kunal Shah To Lead WhatsApp Globally As Meta Invests USD 900 Million In CRED
Meta has appointed Kunal Shah, Founder of Indian fintech company CRED, as the new Global Head of WhatsApp, marking a leadership transition at the messaging platform. Shah will succeed Will Cathcart, who has led WhatsApp since 2019 and will move to a new product-focused role within Meta.
Shah will step away from his operating role at CRED, while retaining his shareholding in the company. Miten Sampat, who has overseen strategy and finance at CRED since 2020, has been named interim CEO.
Shah is an entrepreneur and investor best known as the founder of fintech platform CRED. He launched CRED in 2018 with a focus on rewarding users for timely credit card bill payments and later expanded the platform into lending, insurance, wealth management, commerce and payments. Under his leadership, CRED grew to more than 17 million members and achieved profitability while generating annual revenue of about USD 325 million. Before CRED, Shah founded and led FreeCharge, a digital payments company acquired by Snapdeal in 2015. Recognised for his insights on consumer behaviour, technology and business strategy, Shah is regarded as one of India’s prominent startup founders.
