Government Wants To See More Women In The Workforce

The ministries of women and child development and labour and employment are told to be working closely with Niti Ayog on a plan to boost the participation of women in the national workforce. According to a report in the Economic Times, the objective is to take the participation of women to the global average of 50%+ from the current 37%. The upcoming budget may capture some steps in this direction.

The report quoted an unnamed source saying that a committee is likely to be formed under the women and child development ministry to hold consultation with stakeholders in this regard. It is understood that the development of the care economy is necessary to free up women from household work and allow them to join the workforce.
