FTC Launches Inquiry Into Tech Platform Censorship Practices

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated a public inquiry into how technology platforms restrict users’ access based on speech or affiliations and whether such actions violate the law.

The FTC issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking public input on how tech platform policies may have harmed consumers through content restrictions, bans, or demonetisation. FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson stated that the inquiry aims to determine if these practices involve unfair or deceptive conduct. Users affected by censorship can submit comments until May 21, 2025. The FTC will review submissions to assess potential violations related to competition and consumer rights.

The inquiry will also examine whether censorship practices resulted from a lack of competition or anti-competitive behaviour. The findings could influence future regulations or enforcement actions against technology companies.
