Drew Houston To Step Down As CEO Of Dropbox After 19 Years, Ashraf Alkarmi Named Successor

Dropbox Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Drew Houston will step down after leading the company for 19 years and transition to the role of Executive Chairman. The company said Houston will initially share the Co-CEO role with Ashraf Alkarmi, who has been promoted from product chief and will later take over as sole CEO.

Dropbox also announced that Mike Torres will join from Google as Chief Product Officer in July 2026.

Houston is the Co-Founder of Dropbox. He founded the company in 2007 while studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after developing a file-sharing solution to address personal data storage issues. Under his leadership, Dropbox became one of the early startups from Y Combinator to go public. He joined the Board of Meta in 2020. He also founded a company named Accolade in 2004. Houston holds a degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Alkarmi currently serves as the company’s product chief. He joined Dropbox in late 2024 from Vimeo, where he held leadership responsibilities related to product and platform development. He was the Founder and CEO of PresAsk. Previously, he has also served as Head of Product at Meta and as Director/General Manager (Freevee) at Amazon. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Southern Illinois University.
