Deloitte Fined 6.05 Million Pounds Over Go-Ahead Group Audits
Deloitte has been fined 6.05 million pounds by the UK’s Financial Reporting Council (FRC) for audit failures relating to transport operator Go-Ahead Group’s financial years from 2016 to 2020. The penalty was reduced from 11 million pounds following Deloitte’s exceptional cooperation and admissions.
The case concerns more than 30 million pounds in public funds that Go-Ahead Group’s subsidiary, London & South Eastern Railway (LSER), retained after receiving overpayments from the UK Department for Transport under a rail franchise agreement. The overpayments occurred before Deloitte became the company’s auditor. LSER did not disclose the retained funds to the department, which discovered the issue in 2021 and subsequently took action to recover the money.
The FRC found that Deloitte had failed to adequately challenge Go-Ahead Group’s continued retention of the public funds. Penrose Foss, the FRC’s Executive Director of Investigations and Enforcement, said the breaches reflected a concerning pattern of insufficient scrutiny of decisions and actions that were clearly questionable.
Deloitte acknowledged that aspects of its audit work had fallen short of expected standards and said it had learned from the matter. The firm reiterated its commitment to continuous improvement and delivering high-quality audits.
The case highlights the importance of auditor independence, professional scepticism and effective oversight when reviewing corporate decisions involving public funds.
