Apple Withdraws Key Security Tool For UK Users Amid Data Access Demand
Apple has removed its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) tool for UK users following a request from the UK government for access to encrypted user data.
The ADP tool, which provided end-to-end encryption for iCloud storage, will no longer be available to new users, and existing users will need to disable it. Apple stated that the decision was made after the UK Home Office invoked the Investigatory Powers Act to request access to encrypted data. Apple expressed disappointment, warning that the removal could increase data security risks. Messaging services like iMessage and FaceTime will remain encrypted. Cybersecurity experts criticised the UK government’s approach, stating it could weaken security without achieving intelligence benefits.
