Amazon Signs Agreement To Fight Fake Reviews In The UK

Amazon has committed to strengthening measures against fake online reviews on its UK site, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said Friday. The agreement follows a similar commitment from Google earlier this year.

Amazon will enhance systems to detect fake reviews and address catalogue abuse, where sellers attach unrelated products to well-rated listings to raise ratings. The company has also agreed to enforce stricter sanctions, including banning sellers from its UK site. The CMA stated that about 90% of UK consumers rely on reviews when making purchases, with around 23 billion pounds in annual consumer spending influenced by them. The CMA began investigating fake reviews in 2020 and will now examine whether platforms and sellers are complying with strengthened regulations.
