Amazon, Bank of America and Intel Lag on Workplace Mental Health Policies

Amazon, Bank of America and Intel are among the major US companies showing declining progress in workplace mental health policies, according to the fifth Corporate Mental Health Benchmark published by CCLA Investment Management. The assessment highlights a widening gap between North American companies and their international counterparts in addressing employee mental health.

The benchmark evaluated 121 of the world’s largest listed companies, examining how mental health is integrated into corporate governance, management systems, workforce practices and public disclosures. Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) remained the leading region, with an average score of 55 per cent in 2026, up 20 percentage points from 2022. Asia-Pacific recorded an average score of 36 per cent, also improving by 20 percentage points over the same period.

In contrast, North American companies recorded an average score of 23 per cent, one percentage point lower than in 2022. The region accounts for approximately two-thirds of the companies assessed. Alphabet, Coca-Cola, Nvidia and Tesla were identified among the low performers, with limited progress in their scores.

CCLA Director of Stewardship Amy Browne attributed the lack of improvement in North America partly to reduced regulatory pressure and the backlash against environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.

The report also identified gaps between corporate recognition and measurable action. Although 94 per cent of companies considered mental health a relevant management priority, only 15 per cent of chief executives had made public commitments to workplace mental health. Just 36 per cent reported providing mental health training to line managers, while only 10 per cent disclosed key performance indicators used to measure the impact of their policies.

The findings underline the importance of board-level oversight, measurable workforce wellbeing targets and transparent reporting in making workplace mental health a meaningful corporate governance priority.
