U.K. Information Commissioner John Edwards Resigns Following Workplace Investigation

John Edwards, the United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner and Head of the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), has resigned with immediate effect after an independent workplace investigation found there was a case to answer regarding his conduct.

The resignation comes amid increased scrutiny of the ICO’s handling of data protection complaints. The regulator said its Board and executive team will continue overseeing operations while leadership arrangements are finalised.

Edwards is a lawyer and public policy professional with experience in privacy regulation, data protection, and information governance. He practised as a solicitor and barrister for more than 14 years and also served as a policy adviser to the New Zealand Prime Minister and Cabinet on freedom of information matters. From 2014 to 2021, he served as New Zealand’s Privacy Commissioner, overseeing privacy and data protection frameworks. During his tenure, he chaired the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, now known as the Global Privacy Assembly, and was a member of the OECD’s Informal Group of Experts on Children in the Digital Environment. Edwards holds a bachelor’s degree in laws and a master’s degree in public policy from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
