New Bill In UK Parliament Calls For Urgent AI Oversight
Lord Holmes of Richmond has introduced the Artificial Intelligence (Regulation) Bill as a Private Members Bill in the House of Lords (UK parliament’s upper house).
The bill proposes the creation of an artificial intelligence (AI) authority to align regulators across sectors, monitor economic risks, and oversee AI development. It includes principles such as safety, transparency, fairness, and accountability. Lord Holmes argues that urgent regulation is needed as AI evolves rapidly. He had introduced the bill after the AI Safety Summit in 2023, but it lapsed when Parliament was dissolved. The bill also calls for long-term public engagement on AI’s risks and opportunities, ensuring transparency in data usage. It addresses concerns about AI bias, disinformation, and ethical challenges, highlighting its impact on employment, education, and digital security.
Lord Holmes emphasised that without clear regulations, AI could reinforce discrimination and undermine trust in digital systems.
