XAI’s Grok Faces Investigation In Europe For Generating Non-Consensual Images
European authorities are investigating Elon Musk’s social media platform X following the misuse of its AI tool Grok, which generated sexually explicit images of a 14-year-old actress. French parliament members reported the incident to the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, which added it to an ongoing investigation into X’s handling of scams and foreign interference.
The UK government plans to ban AI “nudification” tools, citing legal obligations under the Online Safety Act to prevent non-consensual intimate images. Ofcom, the regulator for communications services in the UK, stated that creating or sharing sexualised AI-generated images, including child sexual abuse material, is illegal. The incident follows a 120 million euro fine issued by the European Commission against X for breaching EU rules.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) asked X’s India unit on Friday to explain the misuse of the Grok chatbot and said the platform failed to prevent the creation and circulation of non-consensual images. The ministry directed the company to submit an action-taken report within three days, outlining steps to block similar content and ensure compliance with Indian law.
XAI’s Grok has been linked to over 20 cases of AI misuse, prompting scrutiny from regulators in France, the EU, and India. The platform acknowledged lapses in safeguards and said fixes are underway but offered limited public comment.
