X Under EU Scrutiny Following USD 33 Billion Acquisition By xAI
The European Union said it is examining the corporate structure of social media platform X after its USD 33 billion acquisition by xAI. A European Commission spokesperson stated the review is part of regular oversight of designated platforms.
The spokesperson did not confirm reports suggesting a potential fine under the Digital Services Act (DSA), though Bloomberg said an announcement could come before the EU’s summer recess in August. Penalties under the DSA can reach up to 6% of a company’s global turnover. X is already under investigation for possible violations, including the paid verification system linked to the blue checkmark. X has disputed earlier findings. Representatives for X and xAI did not respond to requests for comment on the ongoing inquiry.
