US Regulator NHTSA Rejects Recall Petition Covering Tesla Vehicles, Continues FSD Probe
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has rejected a petition seeking a recall of about 2.26 million vehicles made by Tesla, stating that it found no evidence of a safety-related defect.
The petition, filed in 2023, raised concerns about pedal use and the risk of unintended acceleration linked to one-pedal driving systems. The regulator said its review found limited incidents and data indicating that vehicles responded as designed. The agency added that regenerative braking systems are used across electric vehicles and are not limited to Tesla. It said it will continue to monitor safety data.
Separately, the regulator has expanded its review of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, covering about 3.2 million vehicles. The review has moved to an engineering analysis stage to assess system performance.
Tesla has also submitted its system for review in the Netherlands, with a decision expected in April.
