US Justice Department Forms Task Force To Challenge State AI Laws
The US Justice Department has announced the creation of an artificial intelligence (AI) litigation task force to contest state laws regulating AI, according to an internal memo sent to employees. The move follows an executive order issued by President Donald Trump last month that seeks to limit state-level rules affecting AI companies.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the task force will examine whether state AI laws violate the Constitution, restrict interstate commerce, or are overridden by federal law. The group will consult with White House AI and crypto adviser David Sacks and other officials on which state measures may face legal action. The task force will be led by Bondi or a designated appointee and include officials from the offices of the Deputy and Associate Attorney General, the Civil Division, and the Solicitor General. Several states, including California, Colorado, Texas, and Utah, have passed AI-related laws, while others are considering similar measures. Senate Democrats have introduced legislation to block the executive order.
