
Universal Sompo’s Sharad Mathur Receives Prestigious Corporate Governance Award
Sharad Mathur, Managing Director and CEO of Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Limited, was honoured with the prestigious Stewards of Corporate Governance award at the recently concluded Board Stewardship Global Corporate Governance Summit 2025 held at the historic Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The award recognises Mathur’s exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to advancing Corporate Governance standards in India’s insurance sector.
The summit, which brought together over 300 senior corporate leaders, board members, Independent Directors and governance professionals, served as a premier platform to highlight exemplary governance practices and promote dialogue around sustainability, technology and the evolving role of Indian Boards. Mathur’s award stood out as a tribute to his dedication towards strengthening transparency, accountability and strategic innovation at Universal Sompo.
With close to three decades of experience in corporate strategy within the non-life insurance industry, Sharad Mathur has played a pivotal role in Universal Sompo’s growth and transformation. Before his current role, he held senior leadership positions at SBI General Insurance and ICICI Lombard and was a co-founder of a new insurance venture. His strong academic background includes degrees from Delhi University and the Indian School of Business (ISB), complemented by leadership certifications from the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Mathur’s leadership philosophy integrates deep industry expertise with a progressive vision for governance. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (IOD) and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) India, contributing actively to the governance ecosystem beyond his corporate responsibilities.
Universal Sompo, a joint venture supported by Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Karnataka Bank, Dabur and Japan’s Sompo Holdings, operates through 163 offices nationwide. Under Mathur’s stewardship, the company recorded a gross premium of Rs 5,093 crore in FY25, up from Rs 2,859 crore in FY20, reflecting robust business growth driven by sound governance practices.
