UK’s Ofcom To Scrutinise Tech Algorithms For Child Protection Compliance

The UK media regulator Ofcom Chief Melanie Dawes said the regulator will begin auditing social media algorithms to verify how they control what children see on their feeds.

Under the UK’s Online Safety Act, companies must show that their systems prevent those under 18 from accessing harmful or pornographic content. Dawes said Ofcom has already held meetings with US-based AI and tech firms, including OpenAI, to clarify how new models fall under the Act. She warned that enforcement action could follow if companies fail to comply. Ofcom has already imposed fines and blocked non-compliant websites. Dawes said progress had been made, but more work was needed to ensure full adherence. She added that Ofcom continues to engage with US lawmakers and firms to balance safety requirements with open dialogue on the Act’s implementation.
