UK Regulators Ofcom & ICO Reject Social Media Ban For Children, Seek Safety Steps From Platforms
Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) rejected a proposal to ban social media use for children under 16 and asked platforms to explain how they protect young users.
Both regulators sent a joint open letter to companies, including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. The companies have been asked to submit updates on safety measures by April 30, 2026. The regulators said platforms should strengthen age verification systems to prevent underage access. They also raised concerns about companies relying on self-declared age checks, which allow children under 13 to access services. UK lawmakers earlier voted against a ban on social media for children. Regulators said they will monitor compliance and consider further action if required.
