TRAI May Revisit Net Neutrality Rules After Jio Seeks Clarity On 5G Slicing
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) may re-examine net neutrality regulations after Reliance Jio asked for clearer direction on 5G network slicing. Sources said TRAI is open to reviewing the framework since the current rules were created before 5G slicing was introduced.
The technology enables operators to offer dedicated network segments for specific services and could support tariff plans that use higher bandwidth and lower latency. A source said the regulations outline the basic principles of net neutrality, but technology changes may require more detail. Jio, in its submission to TRAI’s consultation on auctioning spectrum in International Mobile Telecommunications bands, said it has received proposals for tariff products linked to 5G standalone slicing. The queries have pushed the regulator to consider whether the present rules need updates to address new network architectures and service models.
