TRAI Chief Anil Kumar Lahoti Urges Resilient AI Infrastructure & Strong Self-Regulation
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairperson Anil Kumar Lahoti called for resilient artificial intelligence infrastructure and robust self-regulation to mitigate risks and maintain system security and accountability.
Speaking at a Nasscom pre-summit event, Lahoti said the design and deployment of AI infrastructure will determine whether its benefits are widely distributed across regions and sectors. He highlighted the importance of safeguards and frameworks that allow AI systems to adapt to disruptions while continuing to serve public and economic goals. Lahoti also stressed voluntary commitments and self-certification as part of industry-led risk management.
Referring to International Energy Agency projections, Lahoti noted that global AI energy consumption could exceed 945 TWh by 2030 and that India must optimise AI energy demands. He cited the India AI Mission, which provides access to over 38,000 GPUs and a secure 3,000-GPU cluster. He described AI infrastructure as a strategic national asset vital for innovation, economic competitiveness, and India’s transition to a knowledge economy.
