OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman says company could become a for profit
According to a story by The Information on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told some shareholders that the company is thinking about changing its governance structure to become a for-profit company independent of its nonprofit Board.
Altman mentioned that one option under consideration is transforming into a for-profit benefit corporation, similar to rivals Anthropic and xAI, as per a source who heard the comments.
The discussions about restructuring are ongoing, and Altman and the Board may ultimately choose a different path, The Information noted. In response to Reuters’ questions about the report, OpenAI stated, “We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone. The nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist.”
