Nearly 50% Of Recognised Indian Startups Have Women Directors
Nearly half of the startups in India have at least one Woman Director on their board. According to the data available from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), as of June 30, 2024, over 1.4 lakh start-ups have been recognised in India. Out of which, 67,499 have Women Directors on their boards.
The government introduced the Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016. This program features 19 action items focused on areas such as “Simplification and Handholding,” “Funding Support and Incentives,” and “Industry-Academia Partnership and Incubation.” It laid the groundwork for government-backed support, schemes, and incentives designed to foster a dynamic startup ecosystem in India.
On January 16, 2021, during the 5-year anniversary of Startup India, a new plan titled “Startup India: The Way Ahead” was launched. This plan emphasises improving the ease of doing business for startups, increasing the role of technology in implementing reforms, building stakeholder capacities, and fostering a digital Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
