Mexico’s President, Claudia S. Pardo, Takes Legal Action Over ‘Gulf Of America’ Label On Google Maps

Mexico is suing Google over its decision to label the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” for U.S. users on its mapping service, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She said repeated requests for Google to reverse the change were ignored.

The lawsuit follows the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote to officially rename the gulf for federal use and a January executive order by President Donald Trump directing the change. Mexico argues the U.S. lacks the authority to rename the entire body of water. Google stated it reflects names used by official government sources. The change appears only for users in the U.S., while other regions see “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)” on the map.
