Meta Fined 798 Million Euros by EU for Violating Facebook Ad Antitrust Rules

The European Union (EU) has imposed a 797.72 million euro fine on Meta for violating antitrust regulations by automatically granting Facebook users access to Facebook Marketplace and placing unfair conditions on competitors.

According to the European Commission, Meta’s practices undermined competition by leveraging its dominant market position. Meta has announced plans to appeal, arguing that the decision disregards the competitive dynamics of the European online classifieds market.

This substantial penalty, among the largest in EU antitrust history, is part of an ongoing series of regulatory actions targeting major tech companies. The EU highlighted that Meta’s automatic access to Marketplace gave it an undue advantage over rivals in the classified ads sector.
