IndiGo Appoints Willie Walsh As CEO
IndiGo has appointed Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), weeks after the exit of Pieter Elbers. Walsh is expected to take charge in early August after completing his term at the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Walsh became Director General of the IATA in April 2021, becoming the eighth person to hold the role. He began his career in 1979 as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus and rose to become its chief executive in 2001. In 2005, he moved to British Airways as CEO, where he managed operations during the global financial crisis and led partnerships with international carriers. He later oversaw the merger of British Airways and Iberia to form International Airlines Group, serving as its chief executive until 2020. At IATA, Walsh has worked on industry recovery after COVID-19 and the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. He holds a degree from Trinity College Dublin.
