HUL Prepares to Introduce new Eco-Friendly Technology for Detergent Production in a global First

Hindustan Unilever (HUL), India’s largest consumer goods company, is trying out a new technology to make important raw materials for detergents like Soda Ash and Silicate. This is a global first, and their main goal is to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions(GHG), reported by ET. They’re starting this project in India and using Green Ammonia to almost completely stop soda ash emissions. HUL is working with suppliers and vendors to make this happen and support their sustainability efforts.

HUL intends to enhance the production of soda ash with low GHG emissions by implementing carbon capture technology and making use of biomass in partnership with Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited (TFL). In addition to this, they will initiate a trial run for the development of nearly GHG-neutral soda ash by utilising Green Ammonia, which will be supplied by OCI from Egypt, in collaboration with TFL. Moreover, HUL has plans to extend the manufacturing of low GHG Green Silicate by partnering with Sudarshan Chemicals, leveraging a modified production process and the use of biomass in boiler operations.
