Government Issues Notices To Ola, Uber Over Alleged Fare Disparities On iPhones, Android

The government has issued notices to Ola and Uber, with the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) investigating allegations of differential pricing based on the type of mobile handset used, such as iPhones and Android devices.

Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, announced the development, citing consumer claims that fares were higher for bookings made from premium handsets, like iPhones, compared to Android devices. The CCPA is seeking responses from the companies after earlier observations of such practices. While Uber denied personalising fares based on device type, the government has warned against practices that exploit consumers. Both companies have yet to issue official comments on the notices.

The CCPA, established in 2020, is responsible for regulating consumer rights and unfair trade practices. The investigation follows growing concerns over transparency and fairness in pricing across digital platforms.
