Google Likely To Face First EU Fine Under Digital Markets Act

Alphabet’s Google is likely to receive its first fine under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), sources told Reuters.

The Commission is draughting a decision related to charges that Google favoured its vertical search services, including Google Shopping, Flights, and Hotels, over competitors. Earlier this month, Google was fined 2.95 billion euros under older antitrust rules for prioritising its online display technology. The DMA, effective since 2023, sets rules for large tech companies to promote competition and user choice, with violations carrying penalties of up to 10% of global sales. Google has proposed changes to address concerns but has not satisfied rivals. The Commission is proceeding cautiously amid U.S. criticism and trade tensions.
