FTC Urges Amazon & Walmart To Act On False ‘Made In USA’ Claims
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent letters to Amazon and Walmart urging them to take corrective action against third-party sellers making false “Made in USA” claims.
The regulator cited multiple instances where sellers misrepresented the origin of their products and called for enforcement in line with federal law and the companies’ codes of conduct. Four smaller retailers—Oak Street Bootmakers, Stand Flag Poles, Pro Sports Pads, and USA Big Mountain Paper—also received warning letters. The FTC reminded all parties that such claims must be substantiated, as required under the 2021 Made in USA Labelling Rule.
Walmart stated it removes noncompliant listings, while Amazon did not comment. The FTC has pursued 11 enforcement actions under the rule since its adoption.
