Former Axis Bank Director S. Mahendra Dev To Lead PM’s Economic Advisory Council

Economist and former Axis Bank Independent Director S. Mahendra Dev has been appointed Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).

Following the appointment, Dev resigned from the Axis Bank board with effect from June 5, 2025, citing the full-time nature of his new role.

Dev is a development economist with extensive experience in agriculture, rural development, and poverty policy. He served as Director & Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) and chaired the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices from 2008 to 2010. He was also Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the International Food Policy Research Institute and a member of the National Statistical Commission. Dev has authored or edited 19 books and published around 200 research papers. He earned his Ph.D. from the Delhi School of Economics and completed post-doctoral research at Yale University.
