European Commission Flags Meta & TikTok For Transparency Breaches

The European Commission has found that Meta and TikTok failed to meet legal obligations to provide researchers adequate access to public data under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).

The Commission stated that Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok may have created complex procedures for researchers seeking data access and lacked user-friendly mechanisms for flagging illegal content. Meta and TikTok have the opportunity to review the findings and take corrective steps before any final decision. Meta said it disagreed with the Commission’s assessment, while TikTok said it remained committed to transparency but sought clarity on overlapping EU data regulations. If confirmed, the breaches could lead to fines of up to 6% of the companies’ annual global revenue.
