EU Court Ordered Meta to Limit Data Use for Personalised Ads
In a key decision, the EU’s highest court ruled that Facebook’s parent company, Meta, must limit its use of personal data for targeted advertising.
The Court of Justice for the European Union (CJEU) ruled in favour of privacy campaigner Max Schrems, who claimed that Meta used his personal information to target him with personalised adverts. The court emphasised that data protection regulations prohibit Meta from using sensitive personal information, such as sexual orientation, for targeted advertising without rigorous limitations. This ruling emphasises the need of IT businesses adhering to privacy standards when processing user data, with Meta expected to face challenges in other jurisdictions over similar issues. In response to the verdict, Meta stated that it is committed to privacy.
