Canada discontinued advertising on Facebook and Instagram
The Canadian government declared Wednesday that it would halt advertisements on Instagram and Facebook in protest to Meta’s move to ban access to journalistic articles on their social platforms in the country.
Canada’s action is the latest in a saga that began when Trudeau’s administration proposed legislation requiring technology firms to pay creators for referring to or otherwise recycling their content online. To satisfy Canada’s recently established Online News Act, Meta committed to prohibit Canadian news stories on its Instagram and Facebook accounts at the time.
According to the yearly report on government spending, the federal government spent a little over 11.4 million Canadian dollars on Facebook and Instagram advertising in 2021-2022. Google has also stated that it will begin banning Canadian content when the measure goes into force in six months. Rodriguez stated that the government is in discussions with Google and believes that its worries will be addressed by the rules and regulations that will be issued to execute the bill.
