BT Group Appoints Sunil Bharti Mittal & Gopal Vittal As Non-Executive Directors

Sunil Bharti Mittal and Gopal Vittal have been appointed as Non-Independent Non-Executive Directors of BT Group. The appointments follow Bharti Group’s acquisition of a 24.5% stake in BT Group in 2024, making it the single-largest shareholder.

Mittal is the Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, a diversified group with interests in telecom, space communications, digital solutions, real estate, and hospitality. Its flagship, Bharti Airtel, operates in 15 countries across India and Africa, with additional presence in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, serving over half a billion customers. He is Co-Chairman of Eutelsat Group and has held leadership roles at the International Chamber of Commerce and GSM Association. He has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan and the Honorary KBE. Mittal serves on the Boards and advisory councils of institutions, including Harvard University, the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission, and the World Economic Forum.

Vittal is the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Airtel Limited. Over the last 12 years, he has led Airtel’s growth from a 30% to over 40% market share while increasing its market capitalisation from USD 20 billion to USD 120 billion, making it one of India’s most valuable companies. Under his leadership, Airtel has expanded across mobile, home broadband, enterprise services, and digital platforms. Earlier, he spent two decades at Hindustan Unilever, last serving as Head of the Home and Personal Care division and a board member. Vittal serves on the Boards of Bharti Airtel, Airtel Africa, and Indus Towers and is Chairperson of GSMA. He is an alumnus of IIM Kolkata and Madras Christian College.
