Aerospace Veteran Robert Ortberg Appointed As New CEO Of Boeing

Boeing has appointed Robert “Kelly” Ortberg as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Dave Calhoun. Ortberg, an aerospace industry veteran, will begin his role on August 8.

With over three decades of experience, Robert “Kelly” Ortberg, previously led Rockwell Collins, which became Collins Aerospace after its acquisition by United Technologies, now part of RTX. He retired in 2021 but recently stepped down from RTX’s Board.

His selection signifies Boeing’s intent to bring in an experienced yet external leader to navigate its ongoing safety and manufacturing challenges. Analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu noted Ortberg’s tough negotiation skills and experience managing a diverse customer base, including Boeing. As CEO, Ortberg will confront multiple issues: ongoing losses, regulatory scrutiny, supply chain disruptions, delayed aircraft deliveries, defence unit cost overruns, and labour negotiations with potential strike threats. He will also join Boeing’s Board, while Calhoun remains a senior advisor until his March retirement.

Ortberg must ensure product quality amidst a strained supply chain and train new employees to replace those lost during the pandemic. Recent manufacturing flaws, including a door plug blowout on a 737 Max 9, have intensified Boeing’s challenges. Despite these issues, Boeing’s shares rose 2% after Ortberg’s appointment, reflecting investor optimism.
