Kotak Mahindra Gets CCI Nod for Deutsche Bank’s India Retail Business Acquisition
Kotak Mahindra Bank has secured approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to acquire Deutsche Bank’s retail banking and wealth management business in India.
The German lender had announced the proposed transaction in June 2026, with Kotak Mahindra Bank putting the acquisition value at approximately USD 30 million. The regulatory clearance brings the deal a step closer to completion.
The acquisition comes against the backdrop of changing dynamics in India’s banking sector. In earlier years, foreign banks such as Deutsche Bank entered India to tap into the country’s expanding retail banking and wealth management opportunities, particularly among affluent customers and businesses. However, competing with established domestic lenders has become increasingly challenging.
Today, Indian private sector banks have strengthened their presence through extensive branch networks, digital banking platforms, competitive financial products and deeper customer relationships. Regulatory requirements and intense competition have also made it difficult for foreign lenders to scale their retail operations profitably.
For Deutsche Bank, the sale forms part of a broader strategy to simplify its operations and redeploy capital towards other priorities. For Kotak Mahindra Bank, the acquisition offers an opportunity to expand its retail and wealth management footprint and strengthen its position among India’s affluent customer base.
