Indian Consumer Regulator Escalates Probe Into Apple’s iOS 18 Warranty Terms

India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has escalated its investigation into Apple’s software warranty terms following complaints that the iOS 18 update caused screen display and microphone malfunctions, leading consumers to incur repair costs.

The regulator referred the matter to its investigation wing on July 29, 2026, citing alleged violations of consumer rights. Complaints include green, pink and white lines appearing on iPhone screens after the software upgrade.

Apple has disputed the allegations, stating that its software is provided without warranty in line with industry practices and that it found no systemic issues or safety concerns with iOS 18 in India. In an August 20 response, the company argued that consumers were informed of the warranty terms before installation.

The investigation could result in fines, refunds or changes to Apple’s business practices if violations are established. The CCPA has also questioned the charging of repair costs for issues allegedly arising from the software update.
