Microsoft Faces CMA Investigation Over Customer Information On 365 Plans
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened an investigation into Microsoft over concerns that personal and family customers may have been given unclear information about Microsoft 365 subscription plans.
The probe will examine whether Microsoft customers were informed about changes after the company added its AI assistant Copilot to Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Some users were initially offered Copilot without additional charges but later faced higher subscription prices during renewals. The CMA said the investigation will review whether customers received sufficient details about subscription options and price differences before making decisions.
Microsoft said it was reviewing the regulator’s concerns and would cooperate with the CMA. The investigation adds to global regulatory scrutiny faced by Microsoft over its software, cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) activities. Authorities in Australia and Italy are also examining customer information related to subscription renewals.
