Meta Faces USD 1.4 Trillion Penalty Claim In U.S. Teen Mental Health Lawsuit
Meta Platforms is facing a proposed penalty of USD 1.4 trillion in a lawsuit filed by the US states of California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey over the alleged impact of its social media platforms on teenagers. The trial is scheduled to begin on August 18, 2026, in a federal court in Oakland, California.
The states allege that Meta designed Facebook and Instagram to encourage prolonged use among young users despite being aware of potential mental health risks. They have calculated the proposed penalty by applying statutory consumer protection fines to the estimated number of affected minors. Meta has denied the allegations and described the penalty calculation as unrealistic. The company argues there is no recognised medical diagnosis for social media addiction and says the states have not established a direct link between its platforms and widespread psychological harm.
The outcome of the case could influence similar lawsuits against other social media companies operating in the United States.
